Average Height Around the World – The approximate average height of a woman is 163 cm or 5 feet 4.3 inches and the average height of a man is 176.5 cm or 5 feet 9.5 cm. That’s what the World Health Organization estimates.
But globally, the fact is that the average height of a woman is only 159.5 cm or 5 feet 2.8 inches. While the average height of men is 172 cm or 5 feet 7.3 inches. Thus, the global difference in height between women and men is 4.5 inches or 12 cm.
So, there is a difference between the expected or estimated average height and the actual average height. This difference occurs because of poor nutrition or because of disease. In addition, the average height of a society or population is closely related to the habits and living conditions in a population.
So, if the habits and living conditions of each population affect the height of a population, then between each country also experiences differences in average height because of course between each country and region or continent has different living conditions.
In this article we compare the average height of men and women between countries and continents. But first let’s look at the average height of Americans.
Average Height of US-Americans
In the past, between 1999 and 2016 the National Health and Nutrition Examination (NCHS) conducted a large-scale study of the height, weight and average BMI of the American population. This sample was taken in people over the age of 20 years.
In the observation period, which ranged from 1999-2016, it turned out that the average body weight, waist circumference, and BMI increased during the observation period. But for height did not show a significant increase. Some groups did not show a change in average height, even some groups showed a slight decrease in their height.
Check out:
Mean height decreased in the group of men aged 40-59 from 1999 to 2016, and there was also a decrease in mean height among non-Hispanic black men over the span of observation. While a rough estimate that the overall height of women has decreased significantly. The decrease in women’s average height between 1999 and 2016 was from 16.1 cm or 5 feet 3.8 inches to 161.5 cm or 5 feet 3.6 inches.
While research says that the average height of Americans is increasing, the increase is slow when compared to the increase in the average height of people in other countries in the last century. In 1914, an American man was the third tallest person in the world, and an American woman was the 4th tallest person in the world.
A century later, women rank 42nd and men 37th in average height globally. Below is a table showing the average height of adult Americans by age and race, from 2015 to 2016. The average height of men is 175.1 cm and the average height of women is 161.4 cm.
Let’s look at the table below about the average height of American adults in 2015-2016.

How Tall Are People Across The Globe?
As we have mentioned that the average height of people in an area is not only caused by genetics, but is also influenced by the conditions of the area. Environmental factors also influence such as nutrition, urbanization, health, and regional climate, all of which affect the development of children and adolescents (those who are still growing).
